An emission reduction unit is generated by a joint implementation that allows industrialized countries to put into effect projects that reduce emissions in other industrialized countries, for example, by replacing a coal-fired power plant with a more efficient combined heat and power plant.
The Kyoto Protocol specifies that only projects that provide emission reductions that are additional to any that would occur in the absence of the project activity shall be awarded certified emission reductions (CERs) in the case of CDM projects or emission reduction units (ERUs) in the case of JI projects.
JI Projects create Emission Reduction Units that in the future will similarly be used.
