Many women with heavy bleeding who do not have malignant disease or fibroids are candidates for endometrial ablation procedures, in which the uterine lining is destroyed without removal of the uterus. Widely used in England, endometrial ablation has not been embraced by many American surgeons who believe that these women would eventually have to undergo a hysterectomy anyway. Cytyc Corporation (Nasdaq: CYTC), a leading provider of surgical and diagnostic products targeting cancer diagnostics and women's health, today announced that a new clinical guideline for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB), published this month by the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), recommends endometrial ablation as preferable to hysterectomy for the treatment of most women who suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding alone. |
