The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 established Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for new passenger cars under Title V, which intended to double the fuel economy of the U.
The automakers objected, arguing that the California law is preempted by the federal Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which created the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards.
In 1975, Congress passed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), forcing manufacturers to raise the fuel efficiency of their cars and light trucks.
