Vaughan had first come into contact with the Jesuits in 1869 when he met the General while on business for the English Benedictine Congregation in Rome, and in the late 1870s Vaughan was instrumental in bringing the Jesuits into the Sydney archdiocese.
Discussing the religious writing on contemplative prayer produced by the Benedictine nuns of Cambrai, Claire Walker chronicles their struggle to keep the convent's manuscripts out of the hands of Claude White, the president of the English Benedictine congregation, who considered them "poisonous, pernicious and diabolicall" (242).
Even with use of the Smith papers, Vaughan is the victim of, at least, carelessness, especially concerning his alleged failure to report to Propaganda on the English Benedictine Congregation and his alleged opposition to the foundation of a Sydney Franciscan community as such.
