Star Trek has also impacted on modern technology, with mobile phones and medical screening devices resembling Enterprise communicators and tricorders.
The Enterprise Communicator actually incorporates several pieces of software which allow a system developer to see an HL7 message in the environment that he wants it to be viewed, "either as a standard HL7 message using the HL7 encoding rules, or as an object representation, either a CORBA or an ActiveX COM paradigm," Harrington explains.
Subsequent versions of the enterprise communicator will include support for other healthcare data-interchange standards, such as DICOM -- a protocol for transmitting diagnostic images -- and EDIFACT -- an international data-interchange standard widely used in Europe for healthcare data interchange.
