Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an emerging pathogen of equids and humans, but infection of its rodent reservoir hosts has received little study.
WNV and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) are capable of causing significant neurological disease and death, especially in the elderly and in immuno-compromised individuals, and viral encephalitis is on the bioterrorism list of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (CDC, 2004); consequently, monitoring the environment for these pathogens is a vital public health function.
