Bisphenol A at low nanomolar doses confers chemoresistance in estrogen receptor alpha positive and negative breast cancer cells," Environmental Health Perspective, October 8, 2008 on-line.
It has been shown that the increased risk of breast and uterine cancers is associated with estrogen receptor alpha (ER-a) activation and that estrogen receptor beta (ER-b) blocks the growth promoting effects on breast cancer cells.
Understanding estrogen's effects has been complicated by scientists' long-held assumption that the hormone bound to only one type of receptor, now called estrogen receptor alpha (ER[alpha]).
