Roughly 100 cases of FAS/FAE (per 1,000 births) were found on a Manitoba reserve, as compared to a world frequency of FAS in live births at a rate of 1 to 3 cases (per 1,000 births), according to a 1990 study by the U. The findings suggest that FAS/FAE presentations led by peers and utilizing a multimedia-discussion format effectively increase middle school and high school students' knowledge of the effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. FAS/FAE are totally preventable disorders and there is a need for potential parents to be given accurate and consistent advice about the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. |
