These contracts envision the ultimate development of FOLED displays on flexible substrates, which in turn may lead to rollable, retractable and rugged displays with a small and lightweight form factor for use in portable communication devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and MP3 players and laptop computers. While OLED displays today require the use of transparent rigid substrates, such as glass, the combination of Universal Display's TOLED and FOLED technologies enable the novel use of a thin, flexible metallic substrate as an alternative to glass. While continuing to work with plastic substrates, Universal Display has also started the development of FOLED displays on thin metallic substrates, which are more rugged and heat-resistant than glass or plastic and may accelerate the commercialization of FOLED technology. |
