His tourism development office, FONATUR, is working with a coalition of environmental organizations to ensure that appropriate sites are selected and that the entire project, from initial construction to operation, includes safeguards for the unique marine environment. John McCarty, general manager of FONATUR (National Tourism Fund), has committed to starting a beach restoration initiative immediately, covering more than 12 kilometers of Cancun's beaches. Loreto Bay was identified by FONATUR more than 20 years ago as one of five prime tourism destinations in Mexico, the others being Cancun, Los Cabos, Ixtapa-Zihuatenejo and Huatulco. |
