Both products, the Cisco MDS 9216i fabric switch and the Cisco MDS 9000 Multiprotocol Services Module, are equipped with 14 Fibre Channel ports (2-gigabits/second) along with two Gigabit Ethernet ports, which can be configured to support either Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol (FCIP) or Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI).
It addresses Fibre Channel now, and Brocade says that next year they'll announce Blades--insert cards for the switch-that'll feature iSCSI and FCIP, which is Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol.
A key enabling technology in this new SAN was Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol (FCIP) available through the Cisco MDS 9000 IP Storage Services Module, which allowed Exempla to extend Fibre Channel storage traffic over its existing IP network across all three hospitals.
