Cuomo began a nationwide investigation into the student-lending industry in January 2007 that uncovered conflicts of interest, including revenue sharing agreements, girls and trips from lenders to financial aid directors, and even apparent stock tips to financial aid officers. And, UO financial aid director Elizabeth Bickford said, the federal government isn't interested in offering kickbacks to get your business. The defendants, ages 26-63, conspired with the university's former financial aid director to apply for $18,500 federal student loans, though they were not enrolled at the school, officials said. |
