The purpose of IDEA is to (1) assure all disabled children of a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs. The most widely known legislation in the United States is the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, which became the modern Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and which mandates that students with disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate public education. The repetition of catch phrases such as "A Free Appropriate Public Education to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate" is mind-numbing. |
