Bahamian voters ousted their government and returned former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham's party to power in parliamentary elections dominated by economic issues and political scandals, reports Reuters (May 3, 2007): Ingraham's Free National Movement (FNM), won 23 of the 41 seats in the House of Assembly and will form the new government to lead for the next five years, according to the state-owned ZNS television station.
The opposition Progressive Liberal Progressive Party (PLP) regained control of the government in a major election upset 10 years after it was forced from power in a scandal over drug money, reports AP (May 3, 2002): The rout of the governing Free National Movement (FNM) appeared to reflect charges by the PLP that it had ignored the needs of the smaller islands and poorer people in this sprawling archipelago of more than 700 islands and 300,000 residents.
His successor to lead the independent Commonwealth nation of 302,000 people will be either Tourism Minister Tommy Turnquest, the leader-designate of the incumbent Free National Movement, or Perry Christie, leader of the main opposition Progressive Liberal party.
