The false-positive rate of CSF protein 14-3-3 for CJD can be as high as 12%, however, with other causes including vascular disorders, infectious encephalitis, anoxia, malignancy, and even Alzheimer's, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementias (15,17-21). And in frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism, a mutation of the tau gene produces defective tau protein consisting of the tangled filaments that lead to cell death in dementia disorders such as Alzheimer disease. Three new studies show that mutations in the gene that encodes the tau protein underlie some forms of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). |
