Karmann was behind many famous niche vehicles; it's most famous being the Beetle-based Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe; nearly 81,000 of which were built between 1957 and 1974.
DeTomaso Automobili was relying on Ford for engines used in the Mangusta and had purchased the Ghia design and coach-building concern.
There he created the famed Ghia-built "Idea Cars" (which included the Chrysler D'Elegance that was shrunken to create VW's Karmann Ghia and the Norseman that sunk along with the Andrea Doria off the coast of Nantucket), and ushered in the "Forward Look" that literally sent Harley Earl's eventual successor, Bill Mitchell, back to the drawing board.
