Since the mid-1990s Svensmark has been doggedly researching the correlation between galactic cosmic rays and climate, despite ridicule from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that his work is "scientifically extremely naive and irresponsible.
This suggests that it has remained in the outer solar system for millions of years -- long enough for galactic cosmic rays to bombard its surface and form a carbon-rich, tar-like skin that has not been altered by the sun's warming rays.
Recently it was found that the Earth's cloud cover, observed by satellites, is strongly correlated with GCR," he wrote, noting that galactic cosmic rays play a role in cloud formation.
