The program recognizes social, recreational and health benefits of community gardening, as well as beautification of parks, increased park usage, reduction of vandalism, and the sharing of food with hungry people through the Plant a Row for the Hungry Project, a food sharing program sponsored by the Garden Writers Association.
Chambers Productions in Eugene won a bronze award of achievement from the Garden Writers Association for an episode of `Smart Gardening,' a half-hour magazine show it produces in high definition for public television stations.
And the impact is real: in 2000, the Garden Writers Association of America's "Plant a Row for the Hungry," a program that encourages gardeners to donate food to shelters and food banks, recorded 1,200,000 pounds of produce donated to the hungry through their program alone.
