The pilot of the Gates Learjet Longhorn 55 asked to land at LAX, where the runways are longer, said airport and Federal Aviation Administration representatives.
Terry Combs is the son of aviation pioneer Harry Combs, the former head of Gates Learjet and the founder of AMR Combs, a national chain of corporate aircraft service centers.
He had previously been Associate General Counsel of Gates Learjet Corporation.
