Together they attended meetings of the Gay Activists Alliance and danced their hearts out on Saturday nights in SoHo at the Firehouse, the first gay community center in Manhattan. In the four decades since World War II gay organizations have risen and fallen, some supplanting others--the Mattachine Society, Daughters of Bilitis, Society for Individual Rights (SIR), Council on Religion and the Homosexual, Gay Liberation Front (GLF), Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), National Gay Task Force (NGTF, later NGLTF), Queer Nation, and AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (Act Up). She joined the Gay Activists Alliance, but feeling that men dominated the group and that they were not willing to give women equal time, she left in 1972 to form Lesbian Feminist Liberation, taking most of the GAA's women with her. |
