The first Operation Deep Freeze began in 1955 when Navy construction battalions built seven science and support stations on the continent in support of the 18-month International Geophysical Year, which began July 1, 1957. The original readings came from French researchers who participated in the International Geophysical Year in 1958 by performing experiments at the Dumont d'Urville station on the Antarctic coast. Indeed, 1992 is the thirty-fifth anniversary of the birth of the space age: in 1957, the first man-made satellite - Sputnik I - was launched by the former Soviet Union during the International Geophysical Year, which highlighted scientific inquiry and international cooperation. |
