Israel has released close to 90 Palestinian prisoners, most of them members of Abbas's Fatah faction, this week as a goodwill gesture. A rider who calls himself Eagle I -- a commuter also known as Peter Hansen of Los Angeles -- wondered why there had not been a period of free service as a goodwill gesture before the fare increase. Iran's refusal to make the goodwill gesture of suspending enrichment until the achievement of satisfactory IAEA access is, at the very least, shortsighted, but it is in no one's interests to elevate a gesture not made, even one mandated by the Security Council, into a global confrontation and tripwire to a military showdown. |
