The country is a constitutional monarchy in the midst of a gradual transition to a parliamentary democracy, and its king measures his people's well-being by Gross National Happiness (GNH) rather than Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
In the 1970s, concerned about the problems affecting developing countries that focused only on economic growth, he conceived of gross national happiness as an alternative to G.
In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Thinley stated that the conference was "a celebration of the spirit of democracy, of the good and enlightened society that it is expected to promote - of the Gross National Happiness that it must help realize".
