On investigation by HDOH staff, dengue fever was suspected, and clinical specimens were collected and forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for diagnosis. HDOH arranged to have blood drawn in conjunction with the visitor's local health department, doctor, or diagnostic laboratory at no cost to the patient. The virologic influenza surveillance system in Hawaii before the 1999-2000 influenza season consisted of physicians submitting cultures for influenza directly to HDOH (direct submissions). |
