The most common causal agents of HFMD are coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and human enterovirus 71 (HEV71), but other enteroviruses, including CV-A5 and CV-A10, can also cause it. Twenty years later in 1997, deaths associated with epidemics of HEV71-associated HFMD in Sarawak, Malaysia (9), followed closely by outbreaks with high mortality in Taiwan in 1998 and 2000 (10,11), have raised considerable public concern about the virulence of this virus and the disease syndromes most recently attributed to it (12-14). Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina were included in the system after an outbreak of HFMD in Malaysia in 1997. |
