Indigenous activists and people living with HIV/AIDS from Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States ended a conference in Toronto in August with a call for more "culturally-based" AIDS prevention, treatment and education as well as more access to AIDS clinics for aboriginal people living on reserves. ON THE OCCASION OF THE twenty-fifth anniversary of the first identification of HIV/AIDS cases, the UN General Assembly held a high-level meeting on "Uniting the World against AIDS" and called upon hundreds of participants--from Heads of State or Government to civil society, and from AIDS researchers to people living with HIV--for a joint review of the progress made in the global fight against the epidemic. Sadly, nearly a decade after Jane's miracle appeared, 2 million children living with HIV/AIDS in the developing world still are waiting for their miracles. |
