The Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study (HERS) Research Group (I and later II) studies in women who had known preexisting cardiovascular disease initially raised questions about the increase in heart attacks in the first year of hormone therapy use, but it was the publication of the WHI few years later that raised the alarm.
1998: Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study (HERS) clinical trial says that postmenopausal hormones did not protect women with existing heart disease from subsequent heart attacks.
   Another randomized trial, the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study [HERS] concluded that estrogen combined with progestin has no beneficial effects on the heart in women with a history of heart disease.
