Traditionally, the surgery is done while the patient is hooked up to a heart-lung machine which takes over the job of circulating blood while the beating heart is stopped.
He was then taken to an operating theatre and put on a heart-lung machine to relieve pressure on his heart and circulate his blood during surgery.
This was used without causing any medical complications, until it was replaced with a newly purchased heart-lung machine.
