A randomized trial in patients with chronic venous insufficiency showed that horse chestnut seed extract improves contractibility of blood vessel walls, thereby improving circulation, reducing leakage through capillaries, and preventing edema compared with a control group.
Bioforce USA, Ghent, NY, has released results from a meta-analysis that has shown horse chestnut seed extract, in a fresh plant tincture, tablets and topical gel, to be effective in reducing the symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), such as lower leg swelling.
A: Horse chestnut seed extract appears to be well-researched and safe to use for varicose veins with no known interactions with other drugs, and with no warnings--even for pregnant or lactating women.
