Indeed, a recent longitudinal general population survey that followed over 600 children from the onset of asthma to age 26 years showed that sensitization to house dust mite was one of the strongest risk factors for persistence of asthma [odds ratio (OR) 2. House dust mite allergy is the major year-round allergy in the world, though ragweed allergy is more prevalent in the United States. In one house, the European house dust mite predominated, with 7,454 per gram of dust in the couch, 2,361 per gram in the carpet under the couch, and just 232 per gram in carpeting where people often walk. |
