The researchers say that their study supports the idea that the human visual system is composed of two independent systems.
He discusses the characteristics of light, the human visual system, road lighting standards, markings, signs, and traffic signals, interactions between types of vehicle and road lighting, special locations such as tunnels, and concerns such as adverse weather, driver age, glare, costs, and the consequences of too much light as in light trespass and sky glow.
Older theories suggested we prefer symmetry because the human visual system is itself symmetric and so symmetric images are easier to process, or because there is redundant information in symmetric images, making them easier to process (similar to what the reader suggests as finding a pattern).
