The PDR panel was designed to discover human genetic variation while being sensitive to the ethical, legal, and social issues of population definition and not to assess the frequency of variations in specific ethnic subpopulations. He adds that lesser human diversity doesn't show, as the German team argues, that a decimated human population in the Stone Age depleted human genetic variation. The NHGRI initially worked with the Human Genetic Cell Repository at Coriell, which is sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), to establish, store and distribute the cell lines and DNA studied to develop the HapMap, a comprehensive description of the patterns of human genetic variation that has been placed in the public domain. |
