Her work has roots in Mary Douglas's highly influential Purity and Danger: An Analysis of Concepts of Pollution and Taboo (1962); in short, there is a long and established history of how the term is understood among scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Dittman (Instructor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Butler County Community College) provides students with literary survey and analysis of that body of 20th Century counter-culture literature from what has become known as the 'Beat' generation.
