The ICMJE established criteria that each trial must meet to insure transparency and required that the registry be accessible to the public free of charge. The growth in the number of registered trials has been striking since the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) announced that it would require a trial to be registered if its results were ultimately to be published. The ICMJE began as a small group of editors of general medical journals in 1978, and soon became known as the Vancouver group (ICMJE 2005). |
