Kenneth Kunkel, head of the Atmospheric Environment Section of the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois, says that the very hot nights may have been a major factor in the number of deaths during the 1995 Chicago heat wave. Changnon of the Illinois State Water Survey in Champaign reported that the Midwest had grown significantly cloudier during the 1960s and 1970s, with the greatest changes seen in areas of high jet traffic. |
