A person must be very careful not to get water in the ear while the infection is healing.
Excess water and other substances remain trapped in the ear because the ears cover the ear opening so it is less likely that the water and debris can drained or released from the ear.
It is an infection of the outer ear structures and happens because water is trapped in the ear canal.
