I look forward to further instalments in which the current historical conditions of regional autonomy, local pride and recently legislated "local content" in school curricula provide a new context in which indigenous knowledge traditions are expressed. The above are of course different from the historical life of objects (the history of the object's life in relation to indigenous cultural histories) in which is described its form and role within indigenous knowledge systems, that intangible heritage whose practice gives social life to the objects, a knowledge quite complex but mostly orally sustained and transmitted (Svensson 2004). In order to get the support of the general public for any government-run programmes, local dwellers should be given the privilege and the recognition that their indigenous knowledge is vital to conservation of biodiversity. |
