In tribute to Faries, the essays focus on the process of invention, whether by an individual artist or by workshop, tracing in detail the choices and techniques employed to produce the work of art, often discovered using investigative tools like infrared reflectography, pioneered by Faries.
Renaissance paintings are now regularly examined with infrared reflectography, x-radiography, dendrochronology, and binocular microscopy in order to learn about their production, function, and afterlife.
Responding both to the scholarly tendency to celebrate Durer primarily as a graphic artist, and to other technical studies that do not connect their conclusions to actual interpretations of works of art, Luber uses infrared reflectography and formal analysis to demonstrate the significance of Durer's appropriation of Venetian technique.
