Mixing in conventional co-rotating twin screw extruders is usually performed by kneading blocks, as shown in figure 6a, which traditionally employ relatively tight clearances between the kneading disk tips and the inner housing wall.
Built for reliability, it is manufactured with a robust machined aluminum inner housing and Teflon hard-coated ball and housing surfaces.
In intermeshing mixer designs, dispersive mixing occurs between the two rotors and in the region between the rotor "nogs" and the inner housing wall, whereas extensive mixing occurs in the region between the two rotors and in rolling pools formed in front of the rotor nogs.
