What made an ordinary Southern tragedy into an extraordinary world event was the intervention of an interracial group of radicals called the International Labor Defense (ILD). Help came from the International Labor Defense, the legal arm of the Communist Party. The result of such selfless work was that thousands of Blacks joined unemployment councils, and hundreds applied for Party membership and signed up for the Party's legal defense auxiliary, International Labor Defense. |
