However, viruses within the H5 and H7 subtypes have the capacity to acquire genetic properties that confer high virulence and a high proportion of deaths in chickens and other fowl after their introduction into domestic poultry; these viruses are characterized as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses according to the intravenous pathogenicity index method described by the World Organization for Animal Health (1).
