Japanese animation was exported to the Western market as early as the 1960s, when Astro Boy, Gigantor, and Speed Racer made it into local syndication. Otaku, on the other hand, denotes the urban male recluse who invests endless hours and large sums of disposable income in the private consumption of products from the Japanese animation, manga, science-fiction, and music industries. That does not excuse ``Shell 2's'' pretentiousness, nor the fact that, while often strikingly designed, it suffers from the tedious exposition and static image flow that is frustratingly typical of much Japanese animation. |
