Highlights of this month-long celebration include "Porgy and Bess" May 6 and 7, the Jim Cullum Jazz Band May 14, "Gianni Schicchi" May 15, "An Evening with Cole Porter" May 21, and "Tosca" May 28, plus several plantation performances and outdoor concerts. I would say as much for what we have heard tonight- except that to acclaim him as the evening's highlight would subordinate the performance of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Although Buraczeski's By the Horns is the most demure of the group in terms of music--by Jon Faddis, the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and the Lee Morgan Quintet--the work is an elegantly detailed abstract ballet of elongated, smooth moves to classic jazz sounds. |
