A thriving Katahdin Iron Works was built in 1843 with a blast furnace that produced raw iron at the rate of 20,000 tons per year and it still exists today as an historic site.
Katahdin Iron Works, Brownville Junction: In the 1800s a bustling industrial complex and village produced tons of pig iron each year.
The parcel abuts AMC's 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property, which was conserved in cooperation with Maine's Department of Conservation and the Trust for Public Land, for a total of 66,500 acres in AMC management that will be forever open to the public for backcountry recreation.
