Based on data from an aerial survey of the Mount Kenya forests conducted in 1999 by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) with support from UNEP, it showed widespread forest destruction linked with various illegal activities: charcoal production; logging of indigenous tree species such as camphor (Ocotea usambarensis), cedar (Juniperus procera), and wild olive (Olea europea); marijuana cultivation; and unauthorized agricultural settlements. The Kenya Wildlife Service estimates that 80 percent of visitors come to see wildlife. Leakey, a longtime advocate of wildlife conservation and human rights, is the chairman of the National Museums of Kenya and the ex-director of the Kenya Wildlife Service. |
