In addition to its undoubted firepower, automated 'smart ship' technologies greatly reduce the need for a large crew aboard an LCS ship, freeing space for 'specialised' teams to be housed on board. With 55 ships expected in the class, the LCS is central to the Navy's long-term plan to expand its fleet to at least 313 ships by 2020. The LCS was designed by Lockheed Martin along with naval architect Gibbs & Cox, shipbuilders Marinette Marine and Bollinger Shipyards. |
