Like Aldo Leopold's account of Sand County, Wisconsin, Silko's response to Lacona is, in part at least, a lament. The decrease in other expenses resulted from the Company incurring $183,000 in non-recurring expenses in the fourth quarter of 2002 associated with the acquisition of the Lacona branch and the operations of a property classified in other real estate owned. The acquisition of the Lacona branch increased operating expenses while net interest margins were compressed as the cash from the deposit assumption was redeployed; the Company recorded a $275,000 reduction in the carrying value of a corporate debt security downgraded below investment grade; and recognized $110,000 in expenses to preserve the value of a foreclosed farm. |
