A new state law requiring smoke alarms in every unit of an apartment building or rental home was inspired by Troy-based Flagstar Bank's "Safety First Program" in which more than 14,000 free smoke alarms were distributed over the past five years through the Detroit, Pontiac and Lansing fire departments.
