WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures program was selected as co-winner of the 2005 Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Award.
The project is called Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) and is designed to protect big cargo airplanes from sophisticated heat-seeking missiles.
The Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) system is the only operational DIRCM system in production today that is designed to protect military aircraft from infrared-guided missiles, which are growing in popularity among terrorist groups and in third world countries.
