Echocardiography All patients were studied by M-mode echocardiography to determine left ventricular size (left ventricular end diastolic diameter- LVEDD, left ventricular end systolic diameter-LVESD, interventricular septum-IVST and posterior wall thickness--PWT) by three expert sonographers with two recorders (Vingmed System V and Vivid III, General Electric).
The study population includes 399 consecutive patients who presented to the echo lab, 254 African-American and 145 Caucasian, with data collected from standard 12 lead ECG: QRS duration (QRS), QTc Interval (QTc) and from M-mode Echo left ventricular systolic function (LVEF), interventricular septal thickness (IVS), posterior left ventricular wall thickness (PLVW), left ventricular end diastolic dimension (LVED), left ventricular end systolic dimension (LVES).
The objective of this phase of the RHYTHM ICD study was to demonstrate that optimizing the interventricular timing of biventricular pacing therapy results in exercise capacity (peak VO2) or in the left ventricular end systolic diameter (obtained by echocardiography) that is not inferior to simultaneous biventricular pacing in an ICD-indicated patient population with advanced heart failure (NYHA Classification III or IV and wide QRS).
